Ethology in Music: Chickadees in the Concert Hall

The complex language of the Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapilla) was used in two compositions: the electronic Chickadee Frenzy and the symphonic Chickadee Symphony. The process from language to analysis to musical synthesis will be presented. This project was made possible by a Jepson Fellowship from the University of Mary Washington.
